When you think of Tai Chi Chuan, you typically think of Tai Chi Wu style, which is one of the most popular Tai Chi forms in existence today. Wu style TaiChi involves slow, subtle movements, stances, together with the development of your inner Chi, which is your life force or energy. Chi is very important in all forms of Tai Chi Chen. For instance, watching Tai Chi movements, it looks as though the movements wouldn’t have much power at all. However, if you were to be on the receiving end of the Tai Chi strikes, or you were to be blocked by a practitioner of Wu style Tai Chi, you’d find the strikes and blocks to be very powerful and extremely strong. It’s the inner Chi that makes these movements so powerful. However, to build up that Chi, the Tai Chi Wu style must be taught properly. That means perfect movements, perfect stance, and a perfect frame of mind. Essentially, Wu style Tai Chi brings the mind, body and spirit into one being, making this a great martial art form for anyone looking for self improvement.

Wu style Tai Chi must be taught properly from a learned master. You would be doing a great disservice to yourself to learn from a video tape or book, even though there are countless instructions like these on the market today. It’s a misconception that Wu style Tai Chi is a slow martial art that only focuses on quiet meditation. While this is true, this is only part of the training lesson. Most Tai Chi classes only teach this part, but there is much more to it. Wu style Tai Chi is, in fact, a true martial art of itself. There is sparring and Tai Chi weapons training, but this only comes after the initial slow movements are taught and mastered. The reason is that you must learn how to do it slow before you learn how to do it fast. Most classes only teach the slow methodical form of Wu style Tai Chi because either the instructor probably hasn’t learned past that point, or the students have no interest in the practical applications of the art form.

Finding A Wu style Tai Chi Class

Wu style Tai Chi is only one of the three forms of Tai Chi Chuan in existence today but it’s one of the most popular, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a class that teaches the proper Tai Chi movements. Even if you don’t progress beyond the slow, methodical movements, it can still be very beneficial to you. There are many benefits to learning Tai Chi Wu style , such as peace of mind, an increased awareness of your spiritual self, as well as an increase in your chi, or life energy, which we all could use a boost of.

Those who teach tai chi moves are very quick to proclaim the sheer volume of benefits of tai chi to the consumer public. These benefits of tai chi movements include increased health, wellness, peace of mind, etc. Needless to say, all of these perceived health benefits can greatly enhance a person’s ability to increase his or her quality of life. Of course, such quality of life can only be realized if the system of tai chi moves truly provides what it claims in can provide. As such, there needs to be a critical examination in regards to the actual positive elements of the system and whether or not the person who studies the art will actually achieve the promised benefits. So, let’s get on with the examination.

Examining the Benefits of Tai Chi Moves vs. the Falsehood of Mysticism

What needs to be immediately understood in regards to the benefits of tai chi movements is the fact that these benefits are based on basic cardio vascular conditioning and isometrics. In other words, the positive benefits of tai chi come from both basic physiology and biology. The origins of the benefits due not derive from quasi mysticism such as iron fist training, chi power, meridians or any of these dubious concepts. However, many people continue to prescribe a belief in the mystic aspects of the art as opposed to looking at the science aspect of it.

Many of the mystic notions of tai chi moves originate from the early history of kung fu which is to say that these mystic beliefs can trace their origin many hundreds of years prior to the inception of tai chi and carried over into tai chi when tai chi became incorporated into the collective whole of martial arts. In other words, many mystic beliefs derive from a time period prior to a good understanding of physiology and science. While tai chi exercise is based on physiology and science, as the system became part of the world of “kung fu” a number of kung fu myths slowly entered the world of tai chi over the course of many decades. Hence the science of the system becomes lost and people start looking at esoteric concepts as chi power as the ‘source’ of primary tai chi’s benefits.

Of course, to truly gain the benefits of tai chi it is critical to understand the science behind the benefits of this exercise. To believe in weird mysticism will undermine success and should be avoided. Sadly, many do not avoid it. Rather, they embrace the notion. Do not fall into this trap. Stick with logic and disappointment will be avoided.
